Quartz Quarry

For anyone who studied geology in high school, this will bring you back to the first few days of class, and for those who didn’t, our goal is to help you understand the different classifications of rock or stone as you choose your work surfaces, countertops or vanities.

Granite Quarry

All rocks fall into one of three types; igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Believe it or not, natural stone countertops come from all three categories. Igneous rocks come from lava, a primary example of an igneous rock you may find as a countertop is granite. Sedimentary rocks come from layers of sediment and pressure to form rock. Two examples used in homes are limestone and travertine. Metamorphic rocks evolve from another type of rock into a new stone usually from heat and pressure; many people know diamonds are formed from carbon in this manner. A popular countertop that is also a metamorphic rock is marble.

Marble Quarry

You may notice that quartz isn’t listed in any of these classifications. There is a good reason for that. Quartz is a mineral and is actually one of the four minerals that make up granite. Man-made quartz countertops are made from quartz and mixed with a glue-like resin to create a uniform color and pattern. Modlich Stoneworks works with various manufactures to provide many options of quartz countertops. Quartz vanities and countertops are becoming an increasingly popular choice because of the wide variety of colors, consistent pattern and its durability.

Of the three types of rock, which is better for my home or office?

That is a question that can only be answered once you tell us about the way you are looking to use the product and your personal preferences. Each type of natural stone has its own benefits. Granite is well liked because of its durability. Quartz is often chosen for its uniform color and pattern. Marble is a favorite because of its natural beauty. Limestone draws some people because of its neutral color pallet and old world look.

We invite you to come to our showroom and take a look at various countertop options throughout our space.
